Water Research Commission

Guidelines on domestic water accounts – towards a consistent approach in RSA, a study for the Water Research Commission (2008-2010). The study developed an Evaluation Tool and applied it to current municipal accounts. The study also produced guidelines for plain and understandable South African municipal accounts.

Project to improve content, layout and design of the municipal bill. (2010)

Financial Football – a game of financial education. In collaboration with CRC for Visa (2009-2010). The material carries the certification mark of The Plain Language Institute.

Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs

A Free Basic Services Communication Handbook – A workbook for Councillors and Municipal Officials for the Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs. (2009)

European Union

Plain Language and Language Development Project for the European Union Parliamentary Support Programme. This project included the development of a language policy for the Parliamentary Services. (2000-2001)

Expertise and experience:

Iske is the Managing Director of Corporate Research Consultancy (CRC), a qualitative research company founded in 1989. CRC has provided qualitative research services to blue chip companies for almost two decades. CRC has conducted extensive research on a range of financial aspects amongst lower socioeconomic groups on behalf of Finmark Trust Genesis-Analytics and Hollard Insurance. Media research has been conducted for DSTV, Mnet, and a large-scale qualitative and quantitative study on multilingualism in South African urban areas was conducted for SABC television. Media research has also been conducted for radio, AVUSA and Media24. Socio political research has been conducted for various Government departments, political parties, NGOs and GCIS; consumer research for Proctor and Gamble and Colgate Palmolive and advertising research for prominent agencies like Saatchis&Saatchis.

Expertise and experience:

Jenny is an education consultant. She was previously Deputy Chief Education Specialist in the Gauteng Department of Education. She has extensive experience in the writing and publishing of learning materials for educators, curriculum development, language policy, training, editing and project management. She has written English Additional Language Grade 8-12 books for Heinemann (South Africa) and English Language Grade 5 and 6 books for Heinemann (Botswana) as well as various Teacher Guides for a number of publishers. She has also written and compiled Grade 8-10 Life Orientation books for Jacana Media and Grade 11-12 Life Orientation books for Macmillan. In addition, she has edited numerous fiction titles for children and young adults, as well as non-fiction for young adults.


Linda Pienaar

Expertise and experience:

Advocate Linda Pienaar practices law in Pretoria, specialising in youth cases and Labour law.

Previously, she worked for 20 years as advocate in South African Police Service?s Legal Services. In this capacity, she represented the South African Police Service in the technical committees drafting the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Service Act and the Employment Equity Act. She also served in the Committee drafting guidelines for the Children?s Act.

She was a member of the team representing South Africa at the United Nations in New York when the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability was negotiated. She has been the national chairperson of various organisations, and chairperson or member of the Boards of various Sec 21 companies. She was also involved for several years as manager and in-house counsel for, amongst others, the Legal Aid Clinics of UJ (previously RAU) and UNISA?s Legal Aid Clinic.


Rosalie Finlayson

Expertise and experience:

Rosalie is Emerita Professor and Research Fellow in the Department of African Languages, UNISA. She has many years of experience in academic research, writing and training. As a member of the Pan South African Language Board (PANSALB), she served on the Minister of Arts and Culture’s Advisory Panel on Human Language Technologies. She also served on the Minister of Education’s Advisory Committee for the Development of Indigenous African Languages as Mediums of Instruction in Higher Education. Her extensive research publications focus on various aspects of the African languages, codeswitching, transformation discourse, language and identity and language and the media. She has also worked on several language and diversity change management projects.

Lizelle Botha

Expertise and experience:

She has sound knowledge and experience in research, planning and writing in plain language. Lizelle was the Head of Department in Mathematics at Hoërskool Ermelo and is the author of a number of Mathematics textbooks for the Academy of Mathematics and Science. Lizelle has worked closely with us since 2013 on a number of projects of which the most recent is the writing of a Comprehensive Home and Car Insurance Policy in plain language.

Boitumelo Moremong is a young, talented graphics designer with four years of industry experience. She has developed and implemented a number of brand extensions for clients such as Discovery. She also does freelance work and have worked on designs for a number of publications.
